Terrific Tuesday

A big thank you, to all the families for your support with our Home Reading program.  Thank you so much for returning your books today and for all of your time supporting our little readers.  The students are very enthusiastic about learning to read, and are excited to bring home a new book to share with you tonight.

Tonight, I am sending home our list of "popcorn words"for you to review.  These 13 popcorn words (a, and, he, she, I, in, is, it, of, that, the, to, was)"make up 25 percent of the words children will encounter in their reading up to the end of Third Grade!" We have our popcorn words posted on our classroom word wall. By the end of Kindergarten, we would like to see all of our students be able to quickly read these 13 words and recall them very quickly.  Some of the students will need some extra help at home to be able to read all 13 words quickly and accurately.  The students who are able to read all 13 words can practice printing these words.  All of the students in our classroom will be encouraged to copy these words down correctly in their every day work.

Yesterday we ended our day with story time, which featured the fairy tale The Three Little Kittens.  The students loved this classic story and they also seem to really love cats.  So during story time today, we read a book about Pete the Cat.  The students loved listening to the story and reading along with me.  Together, we did a directed drawing of Pete the Cat to focus on our fine motor skills.  The students all worked hard on their illustrations and we wrote some simple sentences to match our illustrations.

Have a great night!

Warm Regards,
Mrs. Lai
