Hello! What a beautiful day it was today. I hope all of the kids had a chance to play at the park tonight or maybe even go for a bike ride. We had a great day at school learning and playing with our Kindergarten friends.
Before Spring Break, all of the Kindergarten classes began a fairy tale unit. This month, we will continue our study of fairy tales. Fairy Tales provide a terrific opportunity to promote reading, writing and oral language in the classroom. Students will be listening to, responding and analyzing a wide variety of fairy tales. We will be looking at the elements found in fairy tales to provide a rich assortment of literacy and math activities. Some of the concepts we will be covering in this unit include:
- Developing a sense of story through reading, listening and viewing
- Begin to use language prediction skills when stories are read aloud
- Ask questions during listening and reading activities
- Makes comments that relate to the topic being discussed
- Letters, letter/sound knowledge
- Word family knowledge
- Forming recognizable letters
- Recognizing high frequency words
- Increased fluency
- Vocabulary development
Before Spring Break, the students read the Gingerbread Man. Today we read a wonderful book called The Gingerbread Teacher. The students really enjoyed comparing this story to the Gingerbread Man. They made some excellent observations. They also created some wonderful illustrations of the Gingerbread Teacher.
