Home Reading Program

Tomorrow night  in your child's backpack you will see a home reading book!!!  These books are apart of our Home Reading Program.  From now until the end of the year, every Tuesday and Thursday we will send home 1 new reading book for you to read with your child.  This reading is not intended to replace the good reading already happening in your homes.  However, our goal is to build our student's confidence and see themselves as readers which is a very big part of the literacy process.   Please remember that, at this stage, many of the children are reading some familiar sight words, however most of the children will be reading by memory and using the pictures to help them solve unfamiliar text. Both are great strategies for learning to read.  A useful tool is to do a picture walk prior to reading the book, looking only at the pictures and not the words, to introduce unfamiliar words.  When reading the words, ask your child to follow the print as they "read" with their finger.  Help them identify the first letter of the word and encourage them to figure out what sound the letter makes in order to try and read new words.  Most of all, have fun!  My goal for home reading is to develop a love of reading in all of the children and to help them feel like they are all readers.  To me, confidence in their abilities is a huge step when it comes to actually learning to read.

Have a great night!  See you Tomorrow :)

Warm Regards
Mrs. Lai
